Post Re: My Daughter has Obsessive-Compulsive like symptoms
My daughter has SM and not been diagnosed OCD but the pshycologist said we have to keep a tap on certain behaviors as they could be OCD'S. The clothing problem you aretalking about is one of hers. We don't have to cut tags out as i explained i need to know the size for when i pack them away for her siblings but she has to were the tag hanging out of every bit of clothing undies included. She literally trembles if there is a spider or bug around(which is probably more due to her anxiety). My hardest is germs!!! She doesn't feel that she can take a sip out of her siblings cups as germs are on it. She is quite particular about what others doaround her and will go on and on about how she could get germs from that person. She can't stand did and even if she were to spill a drop of water on her she would have to fully change. We can go through quite a lot of outfits in one day. I get so frustrated as no amount of explaining seems to alleviate the stress about the germs issue and she talks about it none stop. She is 7 and still takes a stuffed toy in her bag to school. Sometimes brings it out to play but it usually stays in her bag for the bus trips. She must have certain comfort toys to go to bed and without them it is a nightmare. I am keeping an eye on them but they don't seem to be going anywhere. Does anyone know of a goodtherapist in the Newcastle region that has dealt with Selective Mutism as i can't seem to get help because no one is aware or dealt with this before. If anyone could help it owould be greatly appreciated. :D

It took a while before we found a good Psychologist for our daughter. It is possible to find a good Psychologist that is inexperienced as well. If you are able to find one that is interested and will learn about SM, they will be able to help. Our daughter's Pediatrician actually diagnosed our daughter with SM and he had never even heard of it before. He tested her for Autism, but he didn't give up trying to find out what was wrong with her. "Helping your child with Selective Mutism" is an excellent resource in the meantime while you search for a Porfessional to assist you. I am sorry that I am unable to help you find an experienced Professional in your area. Have any of the Teachers ever had a child with SM prior to your daughter attending the School?
